Experience the shape of Wellington

The tour starts in the Wellington CDB and ends in the same place. Prepare the camera for the next 4 to 6 hours, but the time can be adjusted to suit your schedule. The journey begins with a panoramic view of the route from Mount Victoria Lookout. From the city's most impressive viewpoint, it's easy to spot Oriental Bay, the sculptures at the waterfront next to the airport, Shelly Bay, Point Halswell Lighthouse. From the top of Mount Victoria, you can also see Karaka Bay and Breaker Bay behind Miramar and Seatoun Heights. Additionally, Taputeranga Island and Red Rocks can be caught far away.

Summary of the tour

The trip offers a fantastic chance to witness a beautiful sunrise over the sometimes foggy Wellington Harbour. Along the shore, there are many challenging subjects to capture, such as Oriental Bay, which features the iconic Carter Memorial Fountain, and sculptures from the entrance of the Miramar peninsula up to the Taputeranga Marine Reserve. A visit to Shelly Bay is a must-visit spot to indulge in chocolate fish and a delectable coffee to make the day. The chance of spotting dolphins or orcas playing around is there for those lucky enough.

Halswell Lighthouse stands as one of the most photographed beacons that honours the entrance to Wellington Harbour. This iconic landmark oversees marine traffic and is responsible for safeguarding the passage of all vessels in and out of the harbour. Picturesque piers hang suspended over the sea along the stretch between Karaka Bay and Breaker Bay, creating an ideal setting for captivating photography. The location also provides excellent opportunities to capture images of fishermen and their catches. Breaker Bay and Moa Point afford spectacular views of the Interislander and Blue Bridge ferries navigating Cook Strait, offering a stunning panorama whether you visit on a tranquil day or during the spectacle of immense waves.

Following a snack and a hot beverage at Maranui Cafe in Lyall Bay, the journey proceeds towards Devil Gate Rocks along the seaside. Depending on the season, spotting well-camouflaged seals amid the Red Rocks bordering Cook Strait may require careful observation. It’s important to note that the seals’ noses and eyes pinpoint our presence accurately, necessitating a safe distance of at least 20 meters. From this vantage point, the return journey retraces the steps to the starting location from the morning. The Red Rocks segment of the trip might be unavailable.
